UK Expands Toxic Alcohol Poisoning Warning List with Eleven Countries
British authorities has placed eleven new countries to its public advisory list regarding the threats of toxic alcohol toxicity from contaminated spirits.
The revised travel guidance features Bangladesh, India, Iran, Jordan, Libya, Malawi, Malaysia, Morocco, Nepal, Papua New Guinea, and Rwanda due to what officials describe as "a worldwide rise in the number of reported cases" of methanol contamination.
Only recently, the government had earlier included Ecuador, Japan, Kenya, Mexico, Nigeria, Peru, Russia, and Uganda to the current register, after a number of notable cases including the tragic demise of 6 travelers in Laos in 2024.
Travellers are being advised that even tiny quantities of toxic alcohol can lead to permanent eye damage or fatality within 12–48 hours.
Exactly what is Industrial Alcohol and How is it Utilized?
Industrial alcohol is a harmful substance commonly employed in antifreeze, windscreen washer fluid, and paint solvent. This substance is not intended for human consumption.
While it is generated during the creation of alcoholic drinks, commercial firms lower it to minimal, harmless amounts for human consumption through the purification method.
But in some countries, it is illegally mixed into alcoholic drinks to reduce expenses, and because it is tasteless and scentless, it is extremely challenging to notice.
Authorities' Recommendations for Tourists
Foreign Office official Hamish Falconer said that all travellers should be aware of the indicators of toxic alcohol contamination.
"When you are having drinks overseas, stick to reputable establishments and avoid local brews or complimentary drinks," Falconer said.
"If something feels off, like a fatigue that's far more intense than normal or blurred eyesight – seek medical attention immediately."
The complete roster of nations noted as carrying a threat of methanol contamination now includes: Brazil, Bangladesh, Cambodia, Costa Rica, Ecuador, Fiji, India, Indonesia, Iran, Jordan, Kenya, Laos, Libya, Malawi, Malaysia, Mexico, Morocco, Nepal, Nigeria, Papua New Guinea, Peru, Russia, Rwanda, Thailand, Turkey, Uganda, and Vietnam.
