The State of California's Governor Gavin Newsom Files Lawsuit Against President Trump Over State Guard Deployment to Oregon
California Governor Gavin Newsom declared on Sunday that he is filing a lawsuit against Donald Trump over the reported dispatch of three hundred California state guard members to Oregon.
“They are on their way there now,” the governor remarked in a press statement. “The current federal government is blatantly attacking the legal system itself and enacting their dangerous rhetoric – disregarding court orders and considering the judiciary, even those appointed by the President himself, as adversaries.”
Legal Background and National Decision
This planned court challenge comes after a court decision that blocked the White House from sending the Oregon national guard to Portland. The federal judge agreed with claims that it would intensify rather than reduce unrest in the urban area.
The judge stated in her decision, which delays deploying the guard until at least the 18th of October, that there was a lack of evidence that the current demonstrations in Portland warranted the move.
Local Authorities Respond
Caroline Turco, Portland’s senior deputy attorney, noted that there had been peaceful conditions against immigration officials for an extended period and that the latest demonstrations were peaceful in the days before the national leader described the city to be a conflict area, at times featuring a small number of participants.
“This issue goes beyond safety, it concerns authority,” Newsom declared. “Legal action will be our response, but the public should speak out in the face of such dangerous and authoritarian actions by the nation's leader.”
State Legal Chief Comments
In a statement on X, Oregon attorney general Dan Rayfield said that the government is evaluating choices and preparing to take legal action.
“Donald Trump is obviously hellbent on deploying the armed forces in U.S. urban centers, lacking evidence or justification to do so,” his statement said. “It is up to us and the legal system to hold him accountable. We are committed to this course.”
National and Local Reaction
The California national guard referred questions to the defense department. A official representative refused to provide a statement. There was no quick reply from the executive branch.
Broader Context
This development from Oregon came just a 24 hours after the President ordered the deployment of state guard forces to Chicago, the newest in a succession of comparable operations across numerous states in the U.S..
The President had initially revealed the proposal on September 27, claiming he was “authorizing full force, if necessary” in spite of appeals from state authorities and the elected officials, who reported there had been a one, calm rally outside an immigration office.
Past Context
Historically, Trump has promoted the account that Portland is a “war-ravaged” city with activists engaging in chaos and unlawful behavior.
In his initial presidency in 2020, he dispatched government agents to the metropolis during the protests over the killing by law enforcement of a citizen in another city. The unrest extended across the United States but were especially heightened in Portland. Regardless of demonstrations against immigration officials being relatively small in the region recently, the President has cited them as a reason to send troops.
Commenting via social media about the latest move from the President, the governor stated: “It is outrageous. It’s un-American, and it must be stopped.”
