Norris Rejects Piastri's Criticisms About Singapore Grand Prix Overtaking Move

The McLaren driver issued a firm retort to the objections of his teammate Oscar Piastri after their incident at the Singapore Grand Prix, asserting how any competitor that would avoid an identical overtake should not compete in Formula One.

On-Track Clash Triggers Internal Conflict

The Grand Prix on the Marina Bay street circuit was won for Mercedes Russell, but was marked due to the incident in the opening corners, when Norris attacked Oscar Piastri and made contact with Piastri following he had touched the car driven by Verstappen ahead.

“Anyone in F1 would have attempted exactly the same thing that I did, so if you criticize me for only going on the inside of a big gap then you should not be in Formula One,” he declared. “There was acceptable with my move.”

Championship Battle Heats Up

The two McLaren drivers are engaged in a direct battle to win the drivers’ world championship, with the team winning the constructors' title at the Singapore GP. Both drivers finished third and fourth, as Lando closed the gap on Piastri to twenty-two points with six rounds left.

The Australian driver was angry in the moment, stating that it was unjust for the team would not intervene to make Norris return the place since he felt Norris had pushed him off the line. However, race officials issued no penalty.

Driver's Explanation

I underestimated slightly the proximity I was near Max, however that's part of racing and I would have finished in front of Piastri anyway,” stated Norris. “I was on the inside and the last thing I wanted I intended to do is to make contact with Oscar. Considering my standing I am in, I cannot afford to do that compared to Piastri. The FIA deemed it acceptable and the team did so too.”

Teammate's Reaction

Piastri said he wouldn't judge yet until the team held a meeting. I have to examine at the footage again and carefully and reach my own opinion after that,” he stated. This was the first lap, emotions are high so we're urged to voice our views regarding the clash. I shared my view and we'll talk about it moving forward.”

McLaren Boss's Viewpoint

The McLaren team principal Andrea Stella also emphasized McLaren would review their strategy to managing their drivers. We must place everything into context. It’s the comments from a driver during an F1 race, there's the intensity of the race. The data we have is just his perspective. As usual we'll hold a constructive discussion, move forward and emerge stronger.”
