Fianna Fáil candidate Jim Gavin has declared his withdrawal from the Irish presidential election immediately.

He was set to be a candidate among three standing for Ireland's head of state, beside Independent candidate Catherine Connolly and Heather Humphreys of Fine Gael.

Yet, late Sunday he announced via a statement that he "erred that was not in keeping with my character and the standards he upholds."

"Considering all these factors, I've chosen to leave the presidential race immediately and reunite with my loved ones," he said in his announcement.

Additional details to come.
