Donald Trump Touches Down in UK for Unprecedented Repeat State Visit Amid Protests Assemble in Windsor
The US president arrived in the UK ahead of what marks his repeat state visit, an occasion described as historic in modern political relations.
The president and his wife Melania touched down on Tuesday evening at London Stansted on Air Force One. Their itinerary includes events over the next two days, such as being hosted by the monarch, military parades, and a possible aerial demonstration by the Red Arrows together with UK and US F-35 jets.
Protests Erupt Against Trump’s Agenda and Statements
Trump’s arrival has triggered backlash from various quarters in the UK, with the Stop Trump Coalition holding a protest in Windsor on Tuesday and planning another public gathering in central London on Wednesday.
A leading official claimed the US president of fueling the flames of divisive, far-right politics around the globe in the past few years.
The critic asserted that Trump’s deployment of the military in US cities and targeting of marginalized groups echoed tactics taken from the autocrat’s playbook.
He stressed that while maintaining good relations with the US is practical, the UK should not hesitate to speak out against a leader who promotes divisive policies.
Ceremonial Welcome and Protest Scenes
After landing, Donald and Melania Trump were welcomed by American diplomatic representatives and a royal envoy on behalf of the monarch. Yvette Cooper was one of those in attendance to greet the president.
The Trumps then boarded Marine One, their official aircraft, which took off shortly following their arrival. They were expected to travel to the US ambassador’s residence in a central London location.
At the same time, approximately 70 protesters assembled near Windsor Castle, holding placards and chanting slogans such as “Trump out” and “Donald Trump not welcome here”.
One participant commented, “It is necessary to show that we oppose what is occurring in the world at present.”
Another individual expressed dismay at the UK leadership’s decision to offer such a warm welcome, describing it as “repulsive” and questioning whether Trump deserved such exceptional treatment.
Royal Events and Military Displays
King Charles and Camilla are scheduled to greet the Trumps with a ceremonial welcome at Windsor Castle, featuring gun salutes fired simultaneously in Windsor and at the Tower of London.
The Ministry of Defence stated that this would be the largest guard of honour ever presented during a state visit, with approximately 1,300 military personnel and 120 horses taking part.
The event will also include a carriage procession to the castle, accompanied by the household cavalry, and a Beating Retreat ceremony—a debut such an act has been performed for a state visit.
An elaborate state banquet will feature performances by multiple musical groups, such as the a royal musical unit and pipers from the Scots Guards.
Mixed Public Reaction and Future Engagements
While a significant number protested, a few expressed support for the US president’s visit. An attendee remarked that Trump’s presence could help in brokering global stability and strengthening global partnerships.
Another local said that while staying away from demonstrations, they felt the protests represented the views of the most in the UK, stating that the state visit seemed designed to placate Trump rather than represent public sentiment.
The president is scheduled to visit the official retreat of Keir Starmer on Thursday, with military aviators positioned along the route upon his arrival.
