Boston's Leader Michelle Wu Counters President Trump's Threat to Move World Cup Games from City

Boston's mayor, Mayor Wu, indicated that the city was prepared for a face-off with US President Donald Trump regarding his claim that he could order FIFA to relocate World Cup matches from Gillette Stadium, located approximately 35 kilometers southwest of the city.

Mayor Wu spoke on a Boston-based podcast recently to respond to comments from the White House, which had labeled her as "radical left." Trump had threatened that he would contact FIFA President Gianni Infantino if Boston did not "improve its situation."

A great deal of it is secured by contract so that no single person, even if they live in the White House, can reverse it.

She continued, "We're in a world where for drama, for control, for pushing the boundaries ... ongoing threats ... are directed at individuals and communities who refuse to back down and submit or be obedient to a divisive plan."

Mayor Wu further stated, "We will keep being who we are, and that means, unfortunately, we are going to be in a conversation that is targeting Boston's values." She finished by emphasizing her commitment for the Boston, declaring, "Ten toes down for Boston."

Trump's Comments and FIFA Involvement

Recently, Infantino was photographed alongside Trump at the Gaza summit in Egypt. Infantino has also visited the Oval Office and presented World Cup tournament and club championship trophies to the president as gifts.

Earlier, Trump was asked about recent disturbances in South Boston that included a police car being burned. Trump responded, "If things aren't handled well, and if I feel there's unsafe conditions, I would call Infantino – the president of FIFA, who's phenomenal."

He added, "I would say: 'We should relocate the games' and they would comply. He wouldn't love to do it. But he would do it very easily." Trump also directly criticized Mayor Wu, stating, "Boston's mayor is ineffective ... she's radical left, and they're dominating some areas in Boston. That's a pretty big statement, right?"

Previous Warnings and 2026 World Cup Details

Trump has made previous comments that he would take the similar discussion with Infantino about relocating games from other host cities, which are part of the 16 host cities across the continent.

The United States is joint hosts the 2026 World Cup with neighboring countries. The 48-team event is planned to be played from 11 June to July 19 next summer.
